R.E.M. bestond ruim dertig jaar en leverde hits af als Shiny happy people, Losing my religion en Everybody hurts.Op de eigen website schrijft de band: "To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band.
